MY FAVORITE HAT!! THE GLORI-JAM!!

This became my favorite hat of all times I think.  It works up in a snap and is beautiful in all types of yarn!

My friend James Lee Kelley of the Hot off the Hook blog had made a beanie with this crown pattern.  I tested the pattern for him and decided I would like it a lot with a bit of a bill and a big old flower.  This is the hat that became I think the perfect blending of two minds!

The brown is the original hat but the coral hat has a different band version which I will include at the bottom!

Place your flower on the seam at brim of hat and take long stitches at
the base of your petals to define each petal and attach the flower to
your hat.
Pull to back and finish off. Weave in end and cut yarn

          ********************TRIM FOR THE CORAL HAT*************************
Instead of working in the back bar for the knit stitch follow same count of 60 stitches using scs and 8 rows.

  4. May I ask what brand of yarn you used for the coral hat? It is lovely!

  5. It was a Vanna,s Choice in Sunset Coral. I think it is discontinued at 50% off here. Hope it is up to date. http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/vannascolors.html

  9. What size hook did you use to sl st around hat and brim, the sl st made my hat too tight lol!!

    1. I found this also so just left the slip stitch rows out stopping with the single crochets. The hat maintained some stretch with a nice comfy fit. Still turned out awesome--love this pattern!

  10. I used an H but if it becomes too tight go up a size and see what it does. An I perhaps.

  12. I'm making this hat for my sister, and I'm using the correct hook, and my stitch count is correct.... Is it meant to be made small? Or fit really snugly? Sorry if the question was asked twice, it didn't say it posted for some reason.

  13. This is a very stretchy hat. Be sure to not use worsted like Caron Simply Soft. It doesn't have enough body and will come out smaller. If you crochet tightly you might want to go up a hook size. Thanks for visiting and please let me know how it worked out!

  15. Love this hat, however, mine ended up small enough for an infant. I went ahead and finished it (if you'd like a picture) - I have gone over the instructions many times, compared them to what you have posted (as I printed them) - Any ideas? I do not crochet 'tight' and I would just like to know if there is a revision I'm missing - would love to make some for Crochet for Cancer. Blessings, Terri

  20. I hope everyone is using the J hook for the body of the hat before changing hooks for the trim and bill. I crochet fairly tight so I am not sure why a few have issues with sizing, my suggestions would be to go to a K hook for the body and switch to an I hook for the rest.

  27. I was able to follow all of the instructions for the hat EXCEPT the flower! (although I wish there was the simple word together as in Row 2: work two (2) FPDC around
the Ch2 and the first DC TOGETHER of previous Rnd) Any insight on the flower? Puff Stitch: Ch 3, yo, insert hook in same st and draw up a loop,
repeat 2 more times in same st, (DOES THIS MEAN REPEAT BOTH THE YARN OVER AND THE DRAW UP A LOOP) yo place hook in next st and draw up
a loop 3 times, yo and draw hook through all loops on your hook, ch
3, sl st in same st. Sl st in next st. 1 puff made.

  28. The flower directions really confuse me. Are the puff stitches connected to the magic ring? If yes, how? Are they created separately and then attached? If so, how? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This instruction confused me in Round 2 you wrote "work two (2) FPDC around
the Ch2 and the first DC of previous Rnd". Do you mean work two FPDC around them together or two FPDC around each separately?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Work a fpdc around the chain 2 and dc together. The ch2 doesn't count as a dc, so they get crochet together as one.

  31. Hi , I love the hat but, mine doesn't look like the ones pictured. My bill is really small and lays flat on forehead... I guess I expected it to be more like a baseball cap's brim. Can you tell me how to fix it? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was looking at the coral hat again ( I want my brim like that one) and to me it looks like you used thicker yarn than worsted weight or did it differently or something. How do I make my brim look like that one? Thanks again!

  48. Okay, I think I am doing this incorrectly because I tried making this and it is so small. Is this supposed to fit a toddler or an adult? I am using #4 yarn. Maybe I'm too tight? Any tips would be helpful. I am still quite new at this.

    1. i might mention, although using this yarn with softness and eye appealing qualities, it is hard to frog using this type of yarn. so i would stick to her suggested yarn for those who are new to crochet.

  50. Just finished both versions of this hat in three yarns. Yarn does make a difference in sizing. The first was too tight with the sc border, the 2nd was perfect and stretchy (red heart super saver) with the sc border, the third was in between the two with the faux knit border (mainstays). I purposely kept my slip stitches loose because I'm a tight crocheter. Great pattern! I love it, works up so fast and easy. Thank you for sharing it!

    1. I'm having a problem with the brim. I've made it totally according to the pattern and it wants to lay flat and cover my eyebrows. Changed up the pattern and did a row 7 to match row 6 on the band and crocheted the brim onto the front of the loops from row 6's stitches. I thought that would help but it still lays down. Any suggestions?
